Designer Breastplates Become Style Statement, Celebs Keep Wearing

Tom Ford has created the unexpected top of the moment. Pepper Potts would surely approve.

On the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s February issue, Gwyneth Paltrow beams in a fuchsia metallic “anatomical breastplate” by Tom Ford, the same designer behind the iconic white caped gown she wore to the 2012 Oscars.

The cost of the 47-year-old Goop founder’s high-fashion armor? A whopping $15,000.

The unusual piece hails from Ford’s Spring 2020 collection and was reportedly inspired by the similarly sculpted breastplates Yves Saint Laurent showed on his couture catwalk back in 1969, a collaboration with artist Claude Lalanne made from a cast of model Veruschka’s torso.

After the designer included “anatomical breastplates” in his Spring 2020 collection, Big Hollywood celebrities have already sported the same fuchsia armor.

Zendaya wore the $15,000 molded bustier to the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards with a matching pink skirt and Louboutin heels. The actress, 23, was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “Euphoria.”

However, Gwyneth Paltrow became the first star to wear Ford’s breastplate, modeling it on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s February issue.

It seems Paltrow, 47, was more than thrilled about seeing Ford’s eye-catching creation on a fellow celeb: “Thank God I can say I have something in common with Zendaya,” she commented on an Instagram pic of the former Disney star.

The breastplate is quickly proving popular with celebs; Zoë Kravitz sports a similar Tom Ford style in the February issue of Elle.

Issa Rae Gold Saint Laurent Bra For Harper’s Bazaar

Similarly, Issa Rae also sported a gold Saint Laurent bra.

The “Insecure” creator, 36, covers the June issue of Vanity Fair wearing the same sculptural gold Saint Laurent bra that Hailey Baldwin modeled in the pages of last month’s Harper’s Bazaar.

While Baldwin was styled with artistic gold foil around her eyes, Rae’s makeup look was kept classic with bold lipstick and bronzed eyeshadow to emphasize the body jewelry.

The solid piece of metalwork is part of Saint Laurent Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello’s Summer 2021 collection and was inspired by the French fashion house’s 1969 collaboration with jeweler Claude Lalanne, which included a cast of legendary model Veruschka’s bust.

That same collab also inspired Tom Ford’s $15,000 “anatomical breastplates” from his Spring 2020 line. The breastplates worn by both Gwyneth Paltrow and then Zendaya.

Rae wore her gold cover bra underneath a black suit, also by Saint Laurent.

Rae discussed filming the final season of “Insecure” and re-watching the hit HBO show’s.

“All these memories come up, so I can’t watch it purely objectively. And then, of course, you look at performance stuff, you look at hair stuff, you look at appearance stuff. You’re just like, Okay, wow, I went on TV like that?” she said.
