Movies On ‘Sardar Udham Singh’ Before Vicky Kaushal’s “Sardar Udham”
Vicky Kaushal’s biopic drama Sardar Udham is one of the most awaited movies of the year. There are many things about the film that made it special. Even though some of these are just rumors, it worked as nobody knew about it.
Makers revealed that earlier the movie was supposed to go on the floor with Irrfan Khan. After his sudden demise, Vicky Kaushal came onboard to play the titular character.
Sardar Udham will be available to watch online on Amazon Prime Video from 16th October onwards. It is based on the life of Indian revolutionary Udham Singh who had assassinated former lieutenant governor of Punjab Michael O’Dwyer in London.
The assassination was done to avenge the mass killings of many Indians at the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. While fans are awestruck with the look and demeanor of Vicky Kaushal for the movie ‘Sardar Udham,’ little you know that there was a couple of movies on Udham Singh before.
1. Shaheed Udham Singh: Alias Ram Mohammad Singh Azad – 2000
Even the makers were selling the movie stating that nobody has made the movie on Sardar Udham Singh before. There is a movie released back in 2000 titled “Shaheed Udham Singh: Alias Ram Mohammad Singh Azad’ in which Raj Babbar played the title character.
In the movie, along with Raj Babbar, Gurdas Maan portrayed the character of Bhagat Singh, Amrish Puri portrayed the character of Sufi Saint, Shatrughan Sinha played Mohammed Khan, Tom Alter portrayed Brigadier General Edward Harry Dwyer, and Juhi Chawla can be seen as Noor Jahan.
2. Jallian Wala Bagh – 1977
There is another movie released back in 1977 titled ‘Jallian Wala Bagh’ based on the Amritsar massacre which also showed a separate storyline for Udham Singh. Veteran actor Parikshit Sahni portrayed the character of Udham Singh in the movie which also featured actors like Shabana Azmi, Vinod Khanna, Deepti Naval, and Gulzar in key roles.
3. Sarfarosh: The Story Of Shaheed Udham Singh – 1976
A Punjabi film was also made to pay homage to Shaheed Udham Singh. Vicky Kaushal’s portrayal can be the most nuanced and cinematic, but this is not the new thing in Bollywood at all. The portrayal of legendary revolutionary would be amazing and inspirational at the same time.
