After years of speculation and development changes, the land beyond the wardrobe is finally returning to the big screen. Netflix has officially partnered with Oscar nominated director Greta Gerwig to breathe new life into C.S. Lewis’s beloved series. Unlike previous adaptations that began with the Pevensie children, this new era starts at the very beginning of the timeline with Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
This project marks a significant shift for Netflix. With a reported budget of $200 million, the streaming giant is positioning this film as a massive global event. It is not just a streaming release: it represents a bold new strategy involving wide theatrical windows and IMAX experiences. Fans who have waited since the 2010 release of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will finally see the untold story of Narnia’s creation.
Official Release Dates: Theaters vs. Netflix
The rollout for this film is unique compared to previous Netflix originals. To maximize the cinematic impact of Seamus McGarvey’s cinematography, the film will follow a tiered release schedule. Mark your calendars for these specific dates:
- February 10, 2027: Exclusive early screenings in IMAX theaters for a premium experience.
- February 12, 2027: The official wide theatrical release in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. This is facilitated through a partnership with Sony Pictures Releasing (Columbia Pictures) for international markets.
- April 2, 2027: The film arrives on Netflix for global streaming subscribers (excluding France, where theatrical laws may differ).
This two month theatrical window is a first for Netflix, showing their confidence in Gerwig’s ability to draw audiences to physical cinemas.

Greta Gerwig’s Creative Vision and Production Details
Greta Gerwig, fresh off the historic success of Barbie, is taking a hands-on approach. She has both written the screenplay and directed the film. During a recent Q&A with Stephen Colbert, Gerwig described her take on the material as “unexpected” and “visceral.” She aims to capture the specific English charm of the 1900s while utilizing cutting edge CGI to bring the Wood Between the Worlds to life.
Plot Summary: The Origin of the Wardrobe and the Witch
For those unfamiliar with the book, The Magician’s Nephew is a prequel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It follows Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, two children in Victorian London who are tricked by Digory’s Uncle Andrew into testing magical rings. These rings transport them to the Wood Between the Worlds, a gateway to multiple universes.
Their journey takes them to the dying world of Charn, where they accidentally awaken Jadis, a powerful sorceress who has destroyed her own realm. When Jadis follows them back to London and eventually into a new, void-like world, the children witness the birth of Narnia. Through Aslan’s song, stars are born and animals gain the power of speech. The film will explain the origin of the iconic lamp post and how the wardrobe was eventually built from a magical apple tree.
Why The Magician’s Nephew is the Right Starting Point
Choosing to start with the prequel rather than a remake of the most famous story is a strategic masterstroke. It allows Gerwig to establish the metaphysics of Narnia without the immediate pressure of following the Walden Media versions of the Pevensie children.
With a stellar cast led by Meryl Streep and Daniel Craig, and the creative powerhouse of Greta Gerwig at the helm, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is poised to be the fantasy event of 2027. By returning to the chronological beginning of C.S. Lewis’s world, Netflix is inviting a new generation to discover the magic, the rings, and the lion for the first time. Keep an eye out for the official trailer, which recently debuted, showcasing a rock infused and epic tone that promises a Narnia unlike anything we have seen before.

Production is scheduled to begin in July 2025 at Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom. The creative team includes Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who will handle the musical score. Their involvement suggests a soundtrack that is both grand and modern, moving away from the purely traditional orchestral scores of the 2000s trilogy.

Starting here provides a clean slate. It establishes the stakes of the White Witch’s reign and the divinity of Aslan from the very first second of Narnia’s existence. For modern audiences, it serves as a perfect “Episode One” that builds the world before diving into the more familiar war for Narnia’s soul.
