Set against the backdrop of the Soviet Union during the Great Purge, the movie explores the dark corridors of Lubyanka Prison. The A-List Ensemble: Confession Movie Cast

Lead Performances
- Rob Lowe as Professor Alexei: Lowe portrays a disillusioned literature professor caught in the machinery of Stalin’s purges. His character is forced to choose between betraying his conscience and facing ultimate sacrifice.
- James Franco as Vladimir: Franco plays the brilliant but brutal interrogator who happens to be Alexei’s former student. This role marks a major step in Franco’s return to prestige drama.
Supporting Cast
The film features a deep roster of acclaimed character actors:
- Jennifer Jason Leigh: Known for her intense dramatic roles, Leigh joins the ensemble in a key supporting capacity.
- Nick Nolte: The veteran actor brings his signature gravitas to the 1930s setting.

Plot Details: A Tale of Faith and Resistance
The year is 1938. The location is Moscow. The atmosphere is one of total paranoia. Confession (2026) centers on Alexei, a man of letters who is arrested by the state. The charges are severe: he is accused of conspiring with a dissident priest to undermine the Soviet regime.
Alexei is taken to Lubyanka Prison, the headquarters of the secret police. The twist in the story arises when his interrogator is revealed to be Vladimir, a man who once sat in Alexei’s classroom. The movie focuses on the psychological warfare between the two men. Vladimir uses his intimate knowledge of Alexei’s past to break him, while Alexei seeks redemption for his own past sins through his faith. It is described as a claustrophobic, dialogue-heavy drama that tests the limits of human morality and resistance against an all powerful state.
Production Insights: 35mm Film and Directorial Vision
Director Václav Marhoul, famous for the visceral film The Painted Bird, brought a specific technical vision to this project. Unlike many modern digital productions, Confession was shot entirely on 35mm film. This choice was intended to capture the grainy, oppressive texture of 1930s Moscow. The production was based at Santa Clarita Studios, located just north of Los Angeles.
Ben Shapiro wrote the screenplay, focusing on themes of virtue, faith, and the definition of a free human being. The film was produced by Dallas Sonnier, who has a history of producing gritty, unconventional dramas like Bone Tomahawk. The technical team also includes Oscar winning makeup artist Jeff Dawn and cinematographer Peter Menzies Jr., ensuring the film meets high Hollywood standards for visual quality.

Streaming and Theatrical Strategy
Unlike traditional blockbusters, Confession is utilizing a hybrid model. The one night theatrical event on 11 November 2026 targets cinephiles who want to experience the 35mm aesthetic on a large screen. For most viewers, however, the film will be a digital experience.
DailyWire+ will serve as the exclusive streaming home for the movie. This follows a trend of the platform investing in high-budget productions to compete with traditional streaming services. Because of the star power involved, there is significant speculation regarding whether the film will eventually appear on other platforms, but as of now, it remains a DailyWire+ exclusive.
