Akka is the third big series from YRF Entertainment, Yash Raj Films’ streaming arm. Aditya Chopra reportedly greenlit it after hearing first-time director Dharmaraj Shetty’s pitch, and the studio kept the project under tight wraps until its trailer.

Akka Story: What Is the Series About?

The year is 1985. In the coastal town of Pernuru, power doesn’t belong to men. It belongs to the Akkas, a clan of women who run the region’s business, including its liquor trade, under strict traditions. An Akka cannot marry, and she can only inherit the title through a child, biological or adopted.

Bhavani (Keerthy Suresh) runs the clan’s day-to-day affairs under the ageing head, Muthakka (Tanvi Azmi). She’s ruthless and efficient, but she’s also secretly in love with Nanda, who wants to marry her. Then Rudra (Radhika Apte) arrives from Bombay. She’s sent by the gangster Shankar to break the Akkas’ hold on Pernuru, and she teams up with local smuggler Amar to do it. Rudra also turns out to have a family connection to the clan, which turns a turf war into something far more personal.

Akka Review: What Critics Are Saying

Reviews are sharply split, and that’s part of why people are talking about it.

  • Keerthy Suresh is the clear winner. Almost every review praises her as Bhavani. Scroll.in called the series hers, and Bollywood Hungama highlighted her screen presence.
  • Radhika Apte divides opinion. Some critics enjoyed her stylish, unapologetic villain. The Hollywood Reporter India felt she was miscast.
  • The idea gets more love than the execution. The women-ruled world is widely called fresh, but several reviewers, including Koimoi and The Federal, felt it falls back on a standard gangster template with lots of violence.
  • Ratings are middling. 123Telugu gave its Telugu-dubbed version 2.75/5, praising the performances but calling the writing predictable.

Should You Watch Akka?

Watch it if you like period gangster dramas, strong female leads or Keerthy Suresh. At just five episodes, it’s an easy weekend binge. Skip it if you’re tired of revenge sagas heavy on bloodshed, or if you were hoping for a deeper look at a matriarchal society.
