Hollywood has placed its biggest bet yet on India’s micro drama boom. NBCUniversal and Hornbill Capital have led an $80 million Series C round in EloElo Group, the Bengaluru company behind Story TV, one of the most popular vertical drama apps in the country.
The deal values EloElo at around $500 million and takes its total funding to $130 million. More importantly, it signals that one-minute phone soaps, the kind of shows millions of Indians now binge on the metro, are being taken seriously by the world’s biggest studios.

What Is Story TV?
Story TV is EloElo’s flagship app. It streams micro dramas: vertical, phone-first series where each episode lasts around a minute and ends on a cliffhanger. Plots lean heavily on revenge, secret billionaires, forbidden romance and family betrayal. The first few episodes are free, and viewers pay through coins or subscriptions to unlock the rest.
Along with Kuku TV and ShareChat’s Quick TV, Story TV was among India’s most downloaded video-streaming apps last year. More than 118 million Indians now watch micro dramas every month.

Who Is Saurabh Pandey, EloElo’s Founder?
EloElo was founded in Bengaluru in 2020 by Saurabh Pandey, a former Flipkart executive. It started as a live-streaming and creator platform before pivoting hard into micro dramas. Besides Story TV, the group runs a learning app called Master, which competes with Seekho and Kuku’s Guru, and an AI companion app, Voxy AI.

Why NBCUniversal Wants In
The answer is scale and exports. EloElo says the new money will fund vertical dramas made for international audiences, including the United States. India produces these shows cheaply and fast, helped by EloElo’s in-house AI production engine, called Dolphin. NBCUniversal brings global distribution and Hollywood know-how.
- The market is exploding. Analysts at Omdia expect the global micro drama business to touch $14 billion in 2026.
- India is the download leader. India, Indonesia and Brazil together account for more than half of overseas micro drama app downloads.
- But the money is in the West. The US, Japan and Canada lead in-app spending, which is exactly where EloElo wants to sell next.
- Hollywood is already in. Stars including Issa Rae, James Franco and Kim Kardashian have invested in or starred in the format.
What It Means for Viewers and Creators in India
For viewers, more money usually means more shows, better production and more languages. For actors, writers and editors, it means steady work: EloElo already has over 5,000 titles, and every major app is hiring. The flip side is that AI is becoming central to how these shows are made, which will change who gets those jobs.
It also sharpens the rivalry at the top. ShareChat’s Quick TV, Kuku TV and global players like ReelShort and DramaBox are all chasing the same Indian audience. Not sure which to try? See our guide to the best micro drama apps in India.
