What Is The Greatest About?

Rather than cramming Ali’s whole life into eight hours, the show focuses on four defining years. It opens in 1960 with 18-year-old Cassius Clay winning Olympic gold in Rome, and builds to 1964, when the 22-year-old stuns Sonny Liston to become heavyweight champion and announces his new name: Muhammad Ali.

In between, it follows a young Black man coming of age in Jim Crow America: his close but complicated family in Louisville, his growing faith, his friendship with Malcolm X, and how he learned to use his voice as powerfully as his fists. Reviews say the show is at its best outside the ring.

The breakout is Jaalen Best, a relative newcomer who was cast back in 2024 when the series was first ordered. Variety’s review said the show “makes a star” of him, and nearly every critic singles out how well he captures Ali’s swagger, footwork and rhyming trash talk.

The Greatest Review: What Critics Are Saying

  • Strong early scores. The series held a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from its first 11 reviews.
  • Variety called it outstanding, praising its grounded portrait of Ali’s family and faith.
  • RogerEbert.com gave it 3 stars, saying it doesn’t reveal much new about Ali but is thorough and finely crafted.
  • Common praise: period detail, the family scenes with Hardwick and Gourrier, and Best’s lead performance.

Is The Greatest a True Story?

Yes, it’s based on Ali’s real early life, and his estate was involved from the start. Lonnie Ali is an executive producer, and the team describes it as the first authorised scripted series about him. As with any drama, some conversations and timelines are dramatised, but the major events (the Rome gold, the Liston fight in Miami, the name change) all happened.

Should You Watch It?

If you love sports dramas, biopics or simply great performances, yes. You don’t need to know boxing; the show works as a coming-of-age family drama. At eight episodes, it’s a comfortable weekend watch on Prime Video this Diwali.
