HBO has officially confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 will debut in 2027. But fans might want to brace themselves, as it could also mark the end of the road for the acclaimed post-apocalyptic drama.
Speaking to Variety, HBO’s Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys stated, “The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig [Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet.”
While a fourth season hasn’t been ruled out entirely, this announcement suggests Season 3 could serve as the final chapter. The decision ultimately rests with showrunner Craig Mazin, who now leads the series solo following the departure of co-creator Neil Druckmann.
Neil Druckmann Steps Away from the Show
Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog and the creative force behind The Last of Us video games, has stepped back from the HBO adaptation to focus on other projects. Bloys acknowledged Druckmann’s contribution, saying, “A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full-time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog… But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show.”
