HBO’s Harry Potter series was long expected in 2027, but the first season is now arriving much sooner. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on 25 December 2026, and the past week has brought a new Hogwarts poster, the ghosts of Hogwarts cast, a US book title change and a row over the young stars skipping a London event. Here is everything trending about the show right now.
Harry Potter HBO Series Release Date: Christmas 2026, Not 2027
Season 1 premieres on 25 December 2026 on HBO Max, earlier than the 2027 window first announced, TVLine reported. In India, it streams on HBO Max on JioHotstar from the same day, as JioHotstar confirmed on X. The season has eight episodes and adapts the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

New Poster Shows Hogwarts Reflected in Harry’s Glasses
On 29 October, the show released a poster of Hogwarts Castle at night reflected in Harry’s glasses, the first proper look at the castle’s exterior. It carries the tagline “Everyone in our world will know his name.” The design looks close to the castle from the 2001 film, according to TVLine. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry; see our earlier first look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter.
Hogwarts Ghosts and the Sorting Hat Voice Cast
A day later, HBO announced five more cast members, Collider reported:
- Leo Bill as Nearly Headless Nick
- Andrew Brooke as the Bloody Baron
- Laura Smyth as the Fat Lady
- Daniel Fearn as the Fat Friar
- David Threlfall as the voice of the Sorting Hat

Why Harry, Ron and Hermione Will Skip the Oxford Street Lights
HBO has confirmed that Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout will not attend the Harry Potter-themed Christmas lights switch-on on London’s Oxford Street on 9 November. An HBO spokesperson said the decision reflects the young actors’ busy schedules, with season 2 filming underway alongside their schooling, Inside the Magic reported.
The Sun, citing unnamed insiders, claimed safety concerns over possible protests linked to J.K. Rowling’s views on trans rights played a part. HBO’s statement does not mention this. A petition by the Good Law Project asking London Mayor Sadiq Khan to cancel the themed lights has passed 10,000 signatures, while City Hall said it does not organise the Oxford Street lights. The UK’s largest official Harry Potter store opens on Oxford Street on 4 November.
Philosopher’s Stone Returns in America: TV Tie-In Edition
On 3 November, publishers released a TV tie-in paperback of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone with photography from the series on the cover. The big change is in the US: Scholastic’s edition uses the UK title Philosopher’s Stone instead of Sorcerer’s Stone, matching the show, while the text inside is unchanged, according to Wizarding World. Season 2 Is Already Filming
Production on season 2, based on Chamber of Secrets, is already underway. Announced cast includes Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart, Lenny Rush as Dobby, Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle, Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley and Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle. Our piece on how the series can expand Tom Riddle’s backstory digs into what that could mean.
Trailer and Behind-the-Scenes Special
The first trailer drew 277 million views in 48 hours, as reported by Deadline and Storyboard18. Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner and Mark Mylod directs multiple episodes, with Nick Frost narrating the behind-the-scenes special Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic.
