Finding information on the treehouse cast release date can be tricky because several horror projects share this title. However, the definitive 2025 survival thriller directed by Michael Bartlett remains a standout for indie fans. Filmed on location in Missouri, this movie transitioned from a classic creature feature vibe into a gritty, human-centric revenge story.
This article clarifies exactly when the film premiered, who brought the characters to life, and why this specific production faced significant delays during its thirty day shoot.
When Was Treehouse Officially Released?
The rollout for this film was unique for an independent production. Unlike major studio blockbusters, the Treehouse 2014 film saw a staggered international release.
For audiences in the United Kingdom, the movie was made available via DVD on October 20, 2014. This date served as the primary entry point for many fans before it reached North American streaming and VOD platforms. Because it was distributed by Uncork’d Entertainment, the film often reappears on various horror-centric streaming apps, making its original October 2014 launch the key milestone for collectors.
The Core Cast and Character Guide
The strength of the movie lies in the chemistry between its two young leads. Director Michael Bartlett and writer Alex Child were heavily involved in the casting process to ensure the vulnerability of the characters felt authentic.
- J. Michael Trautmann as Killian: The protagonist who is often bullied at school. Trautmann brings a quiet intensity to a character forced to grow up instantly when faced with life or death stakes.
- Dana Melanie as Elizabeth: The girl Killian finds hiding in the treehouse. Melanie’s performance is central to the film, as her character is based on Bartlett’s own wife. She evolves from a victim into a vengeful warrior by the final act.
- Daniel Fredrick as Crawford: Killian’s older brother who tries to protect him but ultimately meets a tragic end.
- Clint James: Plays the role of Killian’s father, a character defined by his past as a traumatized war veteran.
- Nick Herra as The Tall One: One of the primary antagonists whose physical presence creates much of the film’s tension.
Behind the Scenes: Production and Filming Secrets
Michael Bartlett, originally from the UK, chose to shoot the film in Missouri to capture a specific atmospheric dread. Although the project had an initial budget of approximately $1 million, the team worked tirelessly to keep costs below that mark while maintaining high production values.
The Thirty Day Shoot
The original plan was to complete the film in just 19 days. Bartlett was inspired by the fast-paced schedule of the movie The Signal and hoped to replicate that efficiency. However, reality intervened. An influenza outbreak swept through the crew, and other unforeseen logistical hurdles extended the production to 30 days.
The Script Overhaul
While Alex Child and Miles Harrington are the credited writers, Bartlett performed a complete rewrite after he optioned the script. He wanted to focus more on the psychological atmosphere and the specific relationship between Killian and Elizabeth. The result is a film that feels more intimate than a standard slasher.
Plot Summary: A Night of Survival
The story begins with the abduction of a young boy named Little Bob. His sister, Elizabeth, pursues the kidnappers into the woods but becomes trapped. Local brothers Killian and Crawford eventually stumble upon her hiding in a remote treehouse while trying to attend a party.
What follows is a tense game of cat and mouse. The “creatures” in the woods are eventually revealed not to be monsters, but the psychotic sons of a local woman. The film subverts expectations by moving from a supernatural setup to a brutal home-invasion style thriller in the wilderness. The climax, involving a police truck and assault rifles, sets up a dark ending where the survivors choose to hunt their tormentors.
