For years, Elizabeth Holmes was the central figure of the Theranos scandal, a symbol of Silicon Valley hubris and deception. However, the release of the 2026 A24 documentary, You Can See Everything, has shifted the spotlight. Directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the film introduces a new, deeply polarizing figure: Billy Evans, the partner and self-described husband of Holmes.
While Holmes remains the literal face of the fraud, Evans has emerged as what critics are calling the timeliest villain of 2026. Through intimate footage and jarringly candid moments, the documentary portrays Evans not just as a supportive partner, but as a controlling figure who has effectively taken over Holmes’ identity while she serves her federal prison sentence. This article explores the man behind the headlines, his wealthy upbringing, and his controversial role in the ongoing Holmes saga.
Who Is William Billy Evans? Background and Family Wealth
William “Billy” Evans, aged 34, was born into a legacy of hospitality and wealth. He is a scion of the Evans Hotels dynasty, a prominent San Diego family business founded by his grandparents, William and Anne Evans, in 1953. The company owns iconic properties including the Bahia Resort Hotel, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, and the Lodge at Torrey Pines.
Despite his family background, Evans sought to forge his own path in the tech world. He attended the exclusive Francis Parker School before heading to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2015, he graduated from MIT with a degree in economics. His professional resume includes stints at LinkedIn and Luminar Technologies, a company focused on lidar sensors for autonomous vehicles. Interestingly, Evans Hotels recently clarified in a public statement on October 1, 2026, that Billy is neither an employee nor a shareholder of the family corporation, signaling a degree of separation from the core family business.
The Meeting: A Love Story Amidst a Legal Storm
Billy Evans met Elizabeth Holmes on October 7, 2017, at a Fleet Week party in San Francisco. At the time, Theranos was already collapsing, though Holmes had not yet been criminally indicted. Evans recalls being immediately smitten, despite Holmes wearing a floppy hat and sunglasses to hide a scratch from her dog.
The timeline of their relationship moved rapidly:
- 2017: Initial meeting at a venture capitalist’s party.
- 2018: The couple got engaged at a Taylor Swift concert.
- 2021: Birth of their son, William Holmes Evans, just before the fraud trial.
- 2023: Birth of their daughter, Invicta, shortly before Holmes began her sentence.
Evans has remained a steadfast supporter, appearing at nearly every court date and even petitioning the judge for a reduced sentence. His father, William Evans Sr., also notoriously supported Holmes by attending the trial undercover, using a fake name and pretending to be a car enthusiast to talk to reporters.
The Villain Edit: Why Billy Evans Stole the Spotlight
In You Can See Everything, Evans is depicted in a manner that many viewers find unsettling. He is seen listening to podcasts at double speed, a trait associated with modern tech-bro productivity culture. However, the documentary goes deeper into his controlling tendencies.
He reportedly controls 80% of Holmes’ social media activity, engaging in aggressive online disputes with her critics. He also holds power of attorney over her, which allows him to license her image for billboards and create an AI version of her voice and likeness. In one of the film’s most discussed scenes, Evans appears frontally nude in a shower while casually brushing his teeth, seemingly unbothered by the presence of a film crew. This lack of boundaries, combined with his declaration that he has “vengeance in his heart,” has cemented his reputation as an antagonist.

Haemanthus: Is Evans Building Theranos 2.0?
Perhaps the most controversial aspect of Evans’ current life is his new startup, Haemanthus. Registered in Austin, Texas, the company is described as an AI-driven medical testing startup. The parallels to Theranos are impossible to ignore. While Theranos promised to revolutionize blood testing through the failed Edison device, Evans claims his new venture will succeed where Holmes failed.
| Feature | Theranos (Elizabeth Holmes) | Haemanthus (Billy Evans) |
|---|---|---|
| Core Technology | Microfluidics / Edison Device | AI-Driven Diagnostics |
| Location | Palo Alto, California | Austin, Texas |
| Current Status | Dissolved (Fraud Conviction) | Active Startup (2026) |

Life in Austin: Raising Children While Holmes is Incarcerated
Currently, Evans resides in Austin, Texas, where he raises their two children. He visits Holmes twice a week at the Federal Prison Camp Bryan. In a 2026 appearance on the All-In podcast, Evans described the difficulty of balancing his business ventures with the reality of being a single parent to two toddlers.
Holmes is scheduled to move to a halfway house in Austin in August 2027, a transition that will allow her more time with her family, though she will still be under federal monitoring. Until then, Evans remains the gatekeeper of her image, her finances, and her digital ghost, solidifying his role as the most complex figure in the post-Theranos era.
