When Namit Malhotra announced the two-film plan in November 2024, the dates were neat: Part 1 on Diwali 2026, Part 2 on Diwali 2027. Part 1 kept its date. Part 2 didn’t.

In late October, Bollywood Hungama reported that the sequel was moving a full year, and that the new date would be revealed with Part 1. That’s exactly what happened. Ramayana Part 2 is now slated for Diwali 2028.

Malhotra has confirmed the delay. Speaking to E! News, he said the team wanted “a little more time” so that the grand finale could match the work done on Part 1. The exact calendar date hasn’t been announced yet, so expect it closer to the time.

Why Was Ramayana Part 2 Delayed?

Three reasons keep coming up in reports:

  • The vanar sena: Part 2 introduces an entire army of vanars. Each one is a CGI and motion-capture character, which is a far bigger VFX load than Part 1’s human-heavy story.
  • The war: Most of the second half of the epic is one long battle. The makers reportedly want original action set pieces rather than recycled war-film templates, and that takes time to design.
  • Scale: Rather than squeeze the finale into the original date, Malhotra reportedly chose to make it bigger.

Our take: after Part 1’s reviews, where almost everyone praised the visuals and questioned the emotion, an extra year is a chance to get both right. A rushed war film would waste the best material in the Ramayan.

Ramayana Part 2 Story: What Will It Cover?

Part 1 covered the epic up to the end of the Aranya Kaand. Part 2 picks up right after Sita’s abduction and has to cover the remaining three books of the Valmiki Ramayan. If it follows the epic, here’s the road map:

Kishkindha Kaand: Ram finds his army

Ram and Lakshman meet Hanuman for the first time, the meeting Part 1’s post-credits scene is teasing. Hanuman brings them to Sugriv, the exiled vanar prince, and Ram helps him defeat his brother Bali in a duel that is still debated today. In return, Sugriv sends search parties in every direction to find Sita.

Sundar Kaand: Hanuman’s book

Hanuman leaps across the ocean to Lanka, finds Sita in the Ashok Vatika, gives her Ram’s ring, and sets Lanka on fire with his burning tail. Expect this to be Sunny Deol’s showcase, and the stretch of the film fans are most excited to see.

Yuddha Kaand: The war

The vanar sena builds the Ram Setu across the ocean. Vibhishan leaves Ravan and joins Ram. Then comes the war itself: Kumbhakaran woken from his long sleep, Meghanad’s deadly weapons, Lakshman struck down and Hanuman carrying an entire mountain to bring the Sanjeevani herb, and finally Ram against Ravan.

That’s a lot of story for one film. Given how much Part 1 compressed (we noticed the missing Ahilya episode in our review), expect Nitesh Tiwari to pick his battles here too.

Ramayana Part 2 Cast

Returning: Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Yash as Ravan, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman lead the sequel. Kajal Aggarwal’s Mandodari should get far more to do, since she’s Ravan’s voice of reason during the war.

Stepping up: Characters who barely appeared in Part 1 become central now: Harish Uthaman as Vibhishan and Faisal Malik as Kumbhakaran.

New faces:

  • Sunny Deol as Hanuman: introduced in Part 1’s post-credits scene and likely the heart of Part 2. (More in our post-credit scene explainer.)
  • Raghav Juyal as Meghanad: Ravan’s son and Lanka’s deadliest warrior.
  • Sugriv: recent cast reports list Suhail Nayyar in the role. An earlier 2025 report had named Amit Sial, so wait for the makers to confirm.
  • Still unannounced: Bali, Angad, Jambavan and Tara. Expect these reveals to be part of the Part 2 campaign.

How Much of Part 2 Has Been Shot?

Part 2 isn’t starting from scratch. During Part 1’s US promotions in August, Ranbir Kapoor said filming on the second part was already about halfway done. He also said that, given the scale of the story, “Ramayana could have been a 10-part film.” Much of the remaining work is the heavy VFX and war shoot, which is exactly where the extra year is going.

Will There Be a Ramayana Part 3?

Officially, Ramayana is a two-part film, and Part 2 is being called the grand finale. But two things suggest the universe could grow:

  • Reports around the release say the story could stretch into a trilogy if audiences respond strongly.
  • Mid-day has reported that a standalone Hanuman film with Sunny Deol is being developed in the same universe.

Neither is confirmed. Part 1’s box office run will decide a lot.

When Will the Ramayana Part 2 Trailer Release?

Not anytime soon. With the film two years away, the realistic expectation is a first-look or teaser in 2028, probably led by the reveal of Sunny Deol’s full Hanuman look, which Part 1 deliberately kept hidden. We’ll update this page as soon as anything drops.
