What Is Black Doves Season 2 About?

Some time has passed since Season 1. Helen Webb (Knightley) is still secretly passing government secrets to the Black Doves, the shadowy private spy organisation she works for, and the stakes have never been higher: her husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) is about to become, and then becomes, Prime Minister. He doesn’t trust her, and with good reason.

Meanwhile Sam (Whishaw) has lost everything he loved and is drinking his way through low-level hits. The two are pulled back together when someone sets up Helen’s icy handler, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), and Reed goes missing. To protect the people they love, Helen and Sam have to work out who inside the Black Doves wants Reed gone, and their mission leads back to old friends and old enemies.

The standout newcomer, according to almost every review, is Ambika Mod (One Day, This Is Going to Hurt) as Laila, a chatty, gun-happy agent who brings a jolt of chaotic energy to the show. Indian-origin viewers will also enjoy seeing a British-Indian actor in one of the season’s biggest new roles.

Black Doves Season 2 Review: What Critics Say

  • TheWrap said the series gets even better, praising its comic-book-style blend of genres.
  • IndieWire called the season excellent, with sharp jokes, smart music choices and a compulsive pace.
  • The Hollywood Reporter highlighted the crackling chemistry between Knightley and Whishaw.
  • The quibbles: a few plot conveniences, and questions over how a prime minister’s wife slips her security detail so easily.

For context, Season 1 scored 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, so expectations were already high.

Do You Need to Watch Season 1 First?

Yes, ideally. Season 2 builds directly on the explosive Season 1 finale and the relationships it set up. Season 1 is also six episodes, so you can binge both seasons in a long weekend.
