What Is The Body About?

The story kicks off when an initiation for a school dance team goes badly wrong. Soon after, a group of rebellious Catholic schoolgirls start having prophetic visions.

Their visions set off mass hysteria across their small town. Under the scares, the show is about identity, faith and fitting in.

Is The Body Based on a True Story?

No, it is fiction. But it is personal. Shephard has said the show draws on her own experience of growing up queer and repressed in a religious setting, and it satirises that world.

The Salem witch trials and Arthur Miller’s The Crucible are clear touchstones. Shephard has also named Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures and Mean Girls as influences.

She describes the tone as a raunchy teen psychodrama with a dash of Catholic horror, a dramedy that mixes jokes, cliffhangers and creeping dread.

Don’t Confuse It With The Body (2012)

Searching for “The Body Netflix” can also turn up El cuerpo (2012), Oriol Paulo’s Spanish mystery about a corpse that vanishes from a morgue. That is a different story. Shephard’s series is a brand-new 2026 Netflix original.
