Unaccustomed Earth, Netflix’s eight-episode drama based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s 2008 short story collection, premieres worldwide on 17 December 2026. Freida Pinto leads the series, and the official trailer is out now.

What Happens in Unaccustomed Earth?
Freida Pinto plays Parul Chaudhury, a wife and mother. Years ago, she gave up her college first love to honour her father’s wishes.
After a cancer diagnosis, Parul moves her family from India back to Cambridge, Massachusetts, the place where she once felt most at home. Her choices put pressure on her family and the people around her as she tries to reclaim who she is.
How the Show Changes Lahiri’s Book
Lahiri’s book is a set of separate short stories about Bengali American families. The series takes characters and storylines from those stories and weaves them into one continuous family saga.
That is the biggest change readers should expect. Lahiri, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Interpreter of Maladies, is an executive producer on the show.

Who Is Behind the Series?
Playwright Madhuri Shekar created and writes the show. Ritesh Batra, director of The Lunchbox, directs and executive produces the first two episodes. It comes from John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
